Land Rover Forum Guide

Land Rover ForumLand Rover got its start in 1948 with the brand's first model, the Series I. The vehicle was crafted from aluminum and since it was designed with Jeep in mind, developed a solid reputation for its off-roading prowess. That vehicle was sold until the Land Rover Series II made its debut 10 years later, which was then replaced by the Series IIA. In 1970, the Land Rover Range Rover was unveiled with a look that was a bit less utilitarian; a Series III model replaced the Series IIA one year later. The company continued with these models into the following decade, adding a couple extra doors to the two-door Range Rover.

This was all happening outside of the U.S. market, but in 1987, American car buyers were finally introduced to the brand, and within a year the new Land Rover Discovery was released. During this time, the SUV segment continued to flourish and Land Rover's parent company, the Rover Group, was gobbled up by BMW. Within a few years, the lineup had expanded with the addition of the small Land Rover Freelander and the successor to the Discovery, the Discovery II. The Land Rover Defender, which had a Jeep Wrangler appearance and harkened back to the early days of the marque, was sold from 1993 to 1998.

By the late 1990s, Land Rover had positioned itself as a luxury player in the lucrative sport utility game, a distinction that gained the attention of another suitor, Ford Motor Company. The Blue Oval took over ownership of the British off-roading brand in 2000 and went to work delivering a third-generation Land Rover Range Rover, the Land Rover LR3 (formerly the Discovery), and in 2005, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport. Today, the Land Rover family is comprised of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, the Land Rover LR3, and the Land Rover LR2 (the Land Rover Freelander's replacement). Ownership changed hands once again in 2008, when Ford turned the reins over to India's Tata Motors.
